H\u00efMY SYeD (@HiMYSYeD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HiMYSYeD\/statuses\/501124291212353537\">August 17, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><!--more--><br>\nKnown locally as OpenStreetsTO, it is both the <a href=\"http:\/\/openstreetsto.ca\/\">non-profit which brought CicloVia to Toronto<\/a> as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?f=realtime&#038;q=%23OpenStreetsTO&#038;src=typd\">hashtag keeping track of the pilot project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first of two pilot project days when major streets in our city of Toronto are closed to traffic on Sunday Mornings. <\/p>\n<p>Distinct from every other entertainment-related major street closing, this one is <em>really for the people.<\/em> Only the regular storefront businesses and organizations along the route are allowed to set up along the street. <\/p>\n<p>Activity Hubs are located at strategic points to make maximum advantage of these few car-free hours.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve envisioned CicloVia in Toronto since early 2006 when I first ran for Toronto City Council in Ward 19.<\/p>\n<p>It was included in my <strong>Vision 2020 &#8211; Another Toronto is Possible<\/strong> platform when I first ran for Mayor in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>It is included again in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam has also championed CicloVia. <\/p>\n<p>Appropriately enough, the Pilot Project is a T shaped route falling within much of her Ward Boundaries from Parliament to Spadina along Bloor Street and from Yonge and  Bloor south to Queen Street.<\/p>\n<p>I want the next phase expanded along Bloor Street from High Park in the west to Withrow Park in the east.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, there is no reason OpenStreetsTO cannot be extended to Celebration Square in the heart of Mississauga all the way to Rouge Park in North East Toronto, with tributaries connecting neighbourhoods city-wide all alonge the main artery.<\/p>\n<p>The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail route is set to begin service in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>What a wonderful celebration it would be to mark the official opening of The Crosstown LRT with Eglinton Avenue becoming the primary east-west Open Street!<\/p>\n<p><strong>CicloVia &#8211;
